Chef Stephanie Valentine is the chef for the TFS Legacy II Cuvée Release Dinner being held on Friday, April 25th.  Two of our 5th grade students, Daniela and Owen, interviewed Stephanie to find out more about how she became a chef.

When did you start cooking?

At 8 years old. I had a very supportive mom who allowed me to do whatever I wanted and answered questions whenever I wanted. I was not happy in college studying engineering. I wanted to be a chef. Mom said to go to culinary school. I was inspired by my mom.

What is your favorite dish to cook? Or favorite cuisine?

I love all cuisine. I love Mexican and Southeast Asian cuisine. I don't have a favorite dish. I love what I'm making at the time.

Did you work for a restaurant?

Yes, many. I was trained at the famous restaurant "Charlie Trotters" in Chicago for many years as Chef Trotters sous chef.

Chef Stephanie Valentine

Was it difficult?

Yes. Working at a restaurant is a hard job. You're going all the time, on your feet for long hours, cooking for 100-500 people. My first week I was so tired, I cried when I got home at 2 or 3 am.

Now that you've made the choice to be a chef, do you like your choice? Do you think you made the right choice?

Definitely. I've been cooling since 1990, almost 25 years.

What would you say to kids who want to be chefs?

It doesn't matter what you do, just if you love it, it is right for you.

If you could be on any TV show, what kind would it be?

A show geared toward how to cook food in your own home as a family, family meals. I am passionate about people cooking together at home. I love having people get involved with cooking at home with their families.
